More than 600 people attended this year’s Healthy Harvest Festival in Benson.
The event included a 5K run, a one-mile Cupcake Walk for cancer, live entertainment, health vendors, food, a car show, arts and craft vendors and a pie-eating contest.
Nearly 60 walkers took part the Cupcake Walk, with every penny raised going to the American Cancer Society. At the end of the walk, participants received a free cupcake courtesy of Jenny’s Sweet Creations. The Cupcake Walk raised $100,
More than 120 people took part the fifth annual Benson Healthy Harvest 5K. Benson Middle School cheerleaders cheered for the runners as they completed the race. A list of the winners is online bensonhealthyharvest.com.
In the Singing Grove, families were able to learn more about health and fitness programs available in and around Benson. Also, they learned about local nonprofits and shopped for arts and craft vendors.
Entertainment included RENdancE Academy dancers, Alicia’s Dancers, the Cross County Scuffers, Tina Seldin-Cash and Tim Hair.
The Car Show, put on Full Throttle Car Club, drew more than 70 classic cars and 12 motorcycles to Parrish Drive and Johnson Street. Ray Price Harley-Davidson provided a simulator that allowed event attendees to get a feel for what it is like to ride on a motorcycle. The car show raised more than $800 for the Autism Society of North Carolina.
Five contestants braved the pie-eating challenge, sponsored by the N.C. Sweet Potato Commission. This year’s winner, Michael Johnson of Dunn, was a second-time champion and took home the $500 grand prize, plus an electric toothbrush and a free teeth cleaning from Riccobene Associates Family Dentistry.
New this year was the Shred and Protect event. People who live, work and play in Benson shredded more than 6,000 pounds of documents.
